Chapter 11 — Amara

Amara rose to her feet, stumbling a little—still disoriented from the kiss, from finally giving into some of the feelings that had been building in her ever since she’d met the shifters a week ago. She could still feel Tobiah’s lips against hers, the warmth of his body, the scent of him, and her heart was pounding in her chest like a drum. But there stood the other three, and her eyes flicked between their faces, realizing with a sinking feeling that they’d very much seen Tobiah kissing her. Luke looked crestfallen, and that expression wrenched at her heart. Cole’s face was stony, and Beckett, standing behind them, was blinking with a combination of surprise and dismay.

“Um—”

“Sorry to interrupt,” Cole said blankly, moving quickly over to the fire and dumping the armful of wood he’d brought. He was avoiding both of their eyes. Tobiah was standing beside her—she could hear him consciously smoothing his breathing, and felt a thrill of pleasure despite her consternation at having been discovered. She’d made him lose his breath. Gotten under some of that icy composure. That would have felt good if this situation hadn’t been so horribly awkward.

“Yeah. Sorry. If I’d known you—“ Luke cleared his throat, moving to dump his own armful of firewood. “I didn’t know you two were—”

“They weren’t,” Beckett said brightly, his eyes moving between Amara and Tobiah with evident interest. “This is new. How interesting.”

“It was unprofessional of me,” Tobiah said through gritted teeth. Amara glanced sideways at him. “I apologize, Amara. It won’t happen again.”

That made her frown. “What if I want it to happen again?” she asked before she could stop herself, and it was almost worth it to see the look of complete shock on the panther’s face.

“I suppose we should give them some privacy,” Cole said stiffly, turning to Luke. The bear looked completely miserable—she could see that he was fighting to keep his expression neutral, but he was failing abjectly. And something came over her, at the sight of that expression. She didn’t want him to feel like that. There had been a connection between them—she’d felt it as strongly as he clearly had. Luke was attracted to her—and she was attracted to him. And Cole, and Beckett, and Tobiah. Why did she have to choose between them? It was a completely absurd thought, but looking at Luke’s face, she couldn’t stop herself from speaking.

“No,” she said flatly, narrowing her eyes at Cole. “You don’t. I—” She took a deep breath, but her heart was still pounding from the kiss, and something had woken up in her chest. Something hungry and desperate and demanding. “I kissed Tobiah because I’m attracted to him. But he’s—he’s not the only one.”

Cole blinked at her, clearly taken aback by that. She crossed the clearing to get in his space, looking into his eyes, trying to find the man she’d gotten to know over the last week under the wall of ice he’d put up. “Cole—“

“I thought we—I felt—I thought we’d connected, that’s all.
